What it is	Preliminary Consumer Price Index for the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, published by its regional statistical office. It is a flash release that comes out a few hours before the national German CPI for the same month; as the most populous state, its reading helps anticipate the national figure.
How it's calculated	A price survey of a basket of goods and services representative of the state, using the same methodology as the national German CPI but restricted to prices observed within North Rhine-Westphalia. Monthly and year-on-year changes are published.
Market implications	It serves as a preview of the national German CPI, released the same day a few hours later: as the most populous state, an in-line reading removes much of the surprise in the national figure, which is closely watched by the market and the ECB.
Limitations	It covers only the state, not the whole of Germany; the figure is preliminary (vorläufig) and may be revised in the final release a few days later.
