Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
GDP measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Ghana and is the broadest gauge of the size and growth of its economy. It is published by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
How it's calculated
Estimated by reconciling the output, expenditure and income approaches in real terms. The GSS releases GDP growth with sector breakdowns and a non-oil measure.
Market implications
It is the benchmark for Ghana's cycle, an economy built on gold, cocoa and oil. Solid growth supports the cedi and gives the Bank of Ghana room, while a slowdown, amid high debt, strains economic policy.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and revisions, so early figures are not final. Reliance on volatile commodities and a large informal sector make measurement difficult and add variability.
