Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Guatemala over a year. It is the broadest gauge of its economy, published by the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat).
How it's calculated
It is estimated from the expenditure, output and income sides following international standards. It is released in real terms (at constant prices), with the usual reading being the year-on-year (YoY) change in GDP, where agriculture and remittance-fuelled domestic demand carry weight.
Market implications
It is the reference for Guatemala's cycle and affects employment, tax revenue and expectations. Solid growth supports the quetzal and gives room to the Bank of Guatemala; strong remittance inflows make domestic demand heavily dependent on the US economy.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and subject to revisions, so the first reading is not final. High informality and the weight of remittances make capturing real activity difficult, and sectors such as agriculture add seasonality.
