What it is

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Honduras over a period. Published by the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH), it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of the Honduran economy.

How it's calculated

The BCH estimates it via the output, expenditure and income approaches, which must reconcile. It is released in levels and as year-on-year (YoY) real growth, complemented by a monthly economic activity index (IMAE).

Market implications

It is the cyclical reference for a Central American economy heavily reliant on remittances, assembly manufacturing and agricultural exports. Solid growth sustains consumption and revenues, while a slowdown, tied to the US and to farm prices, would strain the public finances.

Limitations

It is released with a lag and the first estimates are later revised, so the flash figure is not final. Widespread informal employment and the weight of remittances mean official GDP only partly captures real activity, with agricultural seasonality.
