What it is
Measures the share of Honduras's labour force that is without a job but available for and seeking work. It is published by Honduras's National Institute of Statistics (INE) from its household survey.
How it's calculated
Derived from the Permanent Household Survey for Multiple Purposes as the unemployed over the labour force times 100, following ILO criteria and as an annual average.
Market implications
The open unemployment rate is usually low, so it tells less than underemployment, which is the dominant feature of the Honduran labour market alongside heavy reliance on remittances. It helps gauge emigration pressure and domestic demand.
Limitations
Open unemployment masks the true weakness of employment, dominated by informality and underemployment. It is subject to sampling error, seasonality and the irregular timing of surveys.
