What it is	The Index of Industrial Production measures the level of output of Hong Kong's manufacturing industry. Published by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) and, given the largely services-based and trade-oriented nature of the Hong Kong economy, it is a narrower indicator than in other economies.
How it's calculated	Expressed as an index against a base year, it is built by aggregating the sub-indices of the various industrial branches, weighted by their share of value added. It is published quarterly, with the year-on-year (YoY) change the headline figure.
Market implications	It provides a read on the industrial part of Hong Kong's economy, though its market impact is smaller than in economies with a large manufacturing base, since industry's weight is modest compared with financial services and trade. It helps round out the assessment of the cycle.
Limitations	The manufacturing sector accounts for a very small share of Hong Kong's GDP, so the index has limited power to explain overall activity. It is quarterly, subject to revisions and can be volatile.
