What it is	Retail sales measure the turnover of retail trade establishments in Hong Kong, food included. Published by the Census and Statistics Department, they are one of the most closely watched gauges of private consumption and tourism.
How it's calculated	They are compiled from a survey of retail businesses on their turnover, used to build an index against a base year. Both the value of sales and the volume (deflated by retail prices) are published, with annual changes.
Market implications	They are a key read on consumption and, above all, on tourist spending (especially from mainland China), which matters greatly for Hong Kong's economy. As the Hong Kong dollar (HKD) is pegged to the US dollar, the impact shows up more in equities than in the currency.
Limitations	It is a volatile indicator, highly sensitive to tourist flows and to seasonal factors such as Chinese New Year. Preliminary figures are revised as more survey responses come in.
