Release
Published annually, referring to a specific date in the year.
What it is
Measures the total population of Hungary and how it evolves over time. It is published by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) and is a structural indicator underpinning ratios such as GDP per capita and population density.
How it's calculated
KSH compiles the figure from the population census and administrative registers, updating it with births, deaths and net migration. It is reported as the population at a reference date (usually 1 January).
Market implications
Demographics shape Hungary's potential growth, labour supply and pension and health spending. In a country with a shrinking population and emigration, it is a structural release watched for its long-term fiscal impact rather than any market effect.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure, and inter-census numbers are estimates subject to revision as registers or migration data improve. It does not capture short-term cyclical swings.
