Release
About one month after the reference period (monthly or quarterly depending on the country).
What it is
Hungary's unemployment rate is the share of jobless people as a percentage of the total labour force. It is the main gauge of the state of the Hungarian labour market and of the economy's capacity to create jobs.
How it's calculated
It is derived from the Labour Force Survey run by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) on a large sample of households, following ILO and Eurostat criteria. A person is counted as unemployed if they are jobless, available for work and actively seeking it.
Market implications
Its path reveals the momentum of the economy and the strength of the labour market. A tight labour market supports consumption and household income and is a key variable for the National Bank of Hungary (MNB) and the forint.
Limitations
It is worth telling whether the rate moves because of labour demand or shifts in the labour force. Survey data are subject to sampling error and revisions, and the headline rate misses underemployment and discouraged workers who stop searching.
