About this indicator

FrequencyMensual
Release En torno a uno o dos meses después del periodo de referencia.
What it isThe balance of trade records the value of goods traded between Iceland and the rest of the world over a period, measured as the difference between exports and imports. It reflects the country's external trade activity.
How it's calculatedStatistics Iceland (Hagstofa Íslands) computes it as the difference between the value of exports and imports recorded in external trade statistics, in millions of Icelandic krónur. A positive balance is a surplus, a negative one a deficit.
Market implicationsThe external balance is a component of GDP, so it bears on growth, and it signals the competitiveness of an economy heavily reliant on trade. A persistent deficit can weigh on the Icelandic króna (ISK).
LimitationsThe figures are not final: each release tends to revise earlier periods and the data come with a lag. They are also volatile given the weight of one-off exports such as aluminium and fish.
