What it is
India's Composite PMI combines manufacturing output and services activity into a single private-sector diffusion index. It is compiled by S&P Global and sponsored by HSBC.
How it's calculated
A weighted average of the Manufacturing Output Index and the Services Business Activity Index, weighted by each sector's relative size in GDP. Seasonally adjusted; a reading above 50 signals expansion.
Market implications
It is the PMI reading closest to the aggregate cycle and is released ahead of the national accounts or official industrial output, so markets use it as the first monthly read on the Indian economy and on the demand momentum watched by the RBI.
Limitations
It is a qualitative survey: it measures the direction of change, not its size. The sample is private firms and the seasonal adjustment factors are revised periodically.
