Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
GDP measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Indonesia and is the broadest gauge of the size and growth of its economy, the largest in South-East Asia. It is published by the national statistics agency (BPS).
How it's calculated
Estimated by reconciling the output, expenditure and income approaches in real terms. Year-on-year growth (versus the same quarter a year earlier) is released, along with breakdowns by sector and expenditure.
Market implications
It is the benchmark for Indonesia's cycle, an economy driven by domestic consumption and commodities. Firm growth supports the rupiah and guides Bank Indonesia, while a slowdown tilts policy towards stimulus.
Limitations
Figures are revised and released with some lag, so they are not final. Exposure to commodity prices and global demand, plus a vast informal sector, complicate interpretation.
