Statistics Indonesia (BPS)
Frequency
Monthly
Release
First working day of the month, 11:00 WIB (06:00 CEST / 04:00 UTC), within the Berita Resmi Statistik.
What it is
Captures the value of Indonesia's goods imports. It reflects domestic demand for energy, raw materials and capital goods and is the counterpart to exports in the country's trade balance.
How it's calculated
Published by the statistics office BPS from customs declarations lodged with the Directorate General of Customs and Excise: CIF value in millions of US dollars. Released monthly on a provisional basis, with a year-on-year change.
Market implications
Rising imports usually reflect firm domestic demand but narrow the trade surplus and pressure the rupiah, whereas falling imports widen the balance. Bank Indonesia tracks them alongside exports to gauge pressure on the currency.
Limitations
Provisional figures, revised as fuller customs returns come in. The value is highly sensitive to energy prices and one-off bulk purchases (capital goods, oil), producing monthly volatility.
