What it isThe BI-Rate is Indonesia's benchmark interest rate, set by Bank Indonesia at its monthly Board of Governors Meeting (RDG). It is the main monetary policy instrument steering the cost of money, inflation and rupiah stability.
How it's calculatedSet by Bank Indonesia's Board of Governors at its two-day monthly meeting; announced on the second day. Since 2024 it replaces the BI 7-Day Reverse Repo Rate as the monetary policy stance benchmark.
Market implicationsA hike raises borrowing costs and tends to support the rupiah and curb inflation; a cut cheapens financing and stimulates activity. One of the highest-impact releases for Indonesian markets (bonds, currency and equities).
LimitationsThe policy rate summarises the stance but not the whole policy mix (market operations, macroprudential, FX intervention). Off-cycle decisions outside the ordinary RDG schedule can occur in periods of stress.
