What it is	Captures the gap between Indonesia's goods exports and imports. As a major commodity exporter (coal, palm oil, nickel), its trade balance swings with commodity prices and drives pressure on the rupiah.
How it's calculated	Published by the statistics office BPS from customs declarations lodged with the Directorate General of Customs and Excise: exports FOB minus imports CIF, in millions of US dollars. Released monthly on a provisional basis.
Market implications	A wide surplus supports the rupiah and shores up reserves, while a deficit weakens it and tends to shape Bank Indonesia's policy stance. Markets watch the balance closely given the heavy commodity weighting of Indonesian exports.
Limitations	Provisional figures, revised as fuller customs returns come in. The balance is highly sensitive to commodity prices and one-off bulk shipments, which makes it volatile month to month.
