What it is

Measures the share of Indonesia's labour force that is unemployed and actively seeking work. It comes from the labour force survey (Sakernas) run by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and is the key labour market indicator.

How it's calculated

Calculated as the unemployed as a percentage of the labour force, following the ILO definition, from a large household survey. The annual figure summarises the periodic rounds (typically February and August).

Market implications

In Southeast Asia's largest economy, a contained rate underpins domestic consumption, the main growth engine. Bank Indonesia takes it into account when assessing the strength of demand, though extensive informality dilutes its direct impact on rates and the rupiah.

Limitations

High informality and underemployment mean the official rate understates labour underutilisation. Being annual and survey-based, it carries sampling error and revisions and does not capture job quality.
