Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Iraq over a period. Compiled by the national statistics authority together with the Ministry of Planning, it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of the Iraqi economy.
How it's calculated
It is estimated via the output, expenditure and income approaches, which must reconcile, with the oil sector carrying a dominant weight. It is released annually as year-on-year (YoY) real growth.
Market implications
It is the reference for the performance of an economy heavily dependent on crude, which provides most of GDP and of state revenue. Growth closely tracks oil output and prices, while non-oil GDP indicates progress on diversification.
Limitations
It is released with a considerable lag and with frequent revisions given statistical limitations and instability. The overwhelming weight of oil produces sharp volatility, and the informal and reconstruction economy is captured incompletely.
