What it is	Ireland's Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP): an inflation gauge built with Eurostat's common methodology, allowing prices to be compared across the EU and the euro-area figure to be computed. It is published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
How it's calculated	It is computed from the prices of a basket of goods and services weighted by household spending, using the harmonised COICOP classification and a common base year. It differs from the national CPI in the treatment of items such as owner-occupied housing. It is reported as an annual (YoY) and monthly (MoM) rate of change.
Market implications	It is the ECB's reference index for its price-stability objective, so Irish inflation feeds into euro-area monetary policy decisions. A print above expectations pushes rates and the euro higher.
Limitations	Being harmonised, it does not capture every feature of Irish consumption, notably the exclusion of owner-occupied housing, so it can differ from the national CPI. For the underlying trend, watch the core measure.
