What it is

How it's calculated
It is published annually by ISTAT, drawing on the permanent census and on births, deaths and migration data. The figure is given for an annual reference date (usually 1 January).

Limitations
It is a low-frequency figure and inter-census estimates are subject to revision as the permanent census or better migration data are incorporated. Migration flows add uncertainty to short-term estimates.
