What it is	The trade balance measures the net difference between Italy's goods exports and imports vis-à-vis the rest of the world over a given period. It is published monthly by the national statistics institute, ISTAT.
How it's calculated	It is calculated as goods exports minus goods imports, based on foreign trade statistics. A positive balance reflects a trade surplus and a negative one a deficit. It is reported in millions of euros, usually split between EU and non-EU partners as well as the overall total.
Market implications	As a large manufacturing exporter, Italy typically posts a trade surplus, so markets watch its evolution as a gauge of industrial competitiveness. A sustained deterioration can signal weaker external demand or costlier energy imports, with implications for the current account and the euro.
Limitations	The figures are released with a lag and are revised as fuller data comes in. The series is volatile owing to the energy bill and high-value items, and it reads better when the EU balance is separated from non-EU trade.
