Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Jamaica over a year. It is the broadest gauge of its economy, published by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN).
How it's calculated
It is estimated from the output, expenditure and income sides following international standards. It is released in real terms (at constant prices), with the usual reading being the year-on-year (YoY) change in GDP, where tourism, mining (bauxite) and remittances carry weight.
Market implications
It is the reference for Jamaica's cycle and affects employment, tax revenue and expectations. Solid growth supports the Jamaican dollar and debt sustainability, and underpins the Bank of Jamaica's policy; the weight of tourism makes it very sensitive to external demand.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and subject to revisions, so the first reading is not final. It is a small economy highly exposed to external shocks such as hurricanes or downturns in tourism, which adds volatility and seasonality.
