What it is	This is Japan's core Consumer Price Index, measuring the change in the prices of the consumption basket excluding its most volatile components. It reflects the underlying trend of inflation and is published by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. Note that the common Japanese 'core' definition strips out fresh food but keeps energy.
How it's calculated	It is calculated in the same way as the headline CPI -a price index weighted by the consumption basket with a given base year-, but stripping out the most erratic price groups, such as fresh food. It is released as a year-on-year percentage change and as an index level.
Market implications	By stripping out the most volatile components it offers a cleaner signal of underlying price pressures, so the Bank of Japan watches it closely to steer monetary policy. Upside surprises reinforce expectations of tightening and can strengthen the yen.
Limitations	By excluding fresh food -and, depending on the variant, energy too- it does not capture the full cost households actually bear when those prices rise sharply, so it should be read alongside the headline CPI. There are also several core definitions that should not be confused.
