What it isA monthly qualitative survey by the Japanese government of around 2,000 workers in cycle-sensitive sectors (retail, hospitality, taxi drivers, personal services). It produces a diffusion index (DI) on CURRENT economic conditions and another on the OUTLOOK two to three months ahead.
How it's calculatedA diffusion index (0-100, with 50 marking no change), seasonally adjusted, built from respondents' assessments of whether the economy is improving, worsening or unchanged. The current-conditions and outlook components are published separately.
Market implicationsIt is a timely, close-to-the-ground gauge of Japanese consumer and cyclical momentum; its turning points tend to lead the hard data and help read domestic demand ahead of official spending figures.
LimitationsIt is qualitative and sensitive to one-off shocks (bad weather, events); the sample is small and reflects subjective perception, so it can overstate swings in sentiment that are not always borne out by the hard data.
