What it isJapan's foreign exchange reserves are the country's total official external assets (foreign currency, gold, SDRs and the IMF reserve position), expressed in US dollars. Released by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), they reflect the capacity for currency intervention and external payments.
How it's calculatedThe sum of the reserve components at month-end valued in dollars, using the exchange rates and market prices at the close of the period.
Market implicationsIt is a relevant reading for the yen: sharp falls can signal intervention by the MOF and the Bank of Japan in the currency market to prop up the currency, especially during bouts of steep depreciation.
LimitationsThe level depends on market valuation (price and exchange-rate moves), not just flows, so on its own it cannot separate intervention from the mere revaluation of assets.
