Frequency
Monthly (flash + final)
Release
Flash around the 23rd of the same month; final on the first working day of the following month. 09:30 JST (00:30 UTC).
What it is
The au Jibun Bank Japan Manufacturing PMI (compiled by S&P Global) is a diffusion index based on a survey of purchasing managers in Japanese manufacturing. Above 50 signals expansion; below 50, contraction. Each month there is a flash (preliminary) and a final reading that revises it.
How it's calculated
A weighted composite of five sub-indices: new orders (30%), output (25%), employment (20%), suppliers' delivery times (15%) and stocks of purchases (10%). Seasonally adjusted.
Market implications
The flash reading is one of the first signals each month of Japan's export-driven factory cycle and moves markets more than the final, which usually confirms it. It is watched for the yen and the Nikkei.
Limitations
A qualitative survey: it measures the direction of change, not its size. The sample is focused on manufacturing and the flash is revised in the final reading.
