What it is	Measures activity in Japan's services sector (retail, transport, finance, information, hospitality, business and personal services), which accounts for around 70% of GDP. Published by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), it is the services counterpart to the industrial production index.
How it's calculated	A volume index (base 2020=100) built from activity indicators for each services branch, weighted by value added. The seasonally adjusted month-on-month change is the headline figure.
Market implications	As services outweigh manufacturing in GDP, it offers a clearer read on the real economy; its trend tracks consumption and domestic demand and helps anticipate growth ahead of the quarterly GDP figures.
Limitations	It is released with a lag and subject to revision. It aggregates highly heterogeneous branches, so the headline can mask sectoral divergences, and markets follow it less closely than the industrial production index.
