Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Jordan over a period. Published by the Department of Statistics (DOS), it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of the Jordanian economy.
How it's calculated
The DOS estimates it via the output, expenditure and income approaches, which must reconcile. It is released in levels and as year-on-year (YoY) real growth, with quarterly data by economic sector.
Market implications
It is the cyclical reference for an economy reliant on services, remittances and foreign aid, with its currency pegged to the dollar. Solid growth supports debt sustainability and the currency peg, while a slowdown would strain the public finances.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and the first estimates are later revised, so the initial figure is not final. The large presence of refugees and of the informal economy, along with exposure to regional shocks, makes real activity hard to measure.
