Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
GDP measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Kenya and is the broadest gauge of the size and growth of its economy. It is published by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).
How it's calculated
Estimated by reconciling the output, expenditure and income approaches in real terms. The KNBS releases year-on-year GDP growth, with agriculture and services featuring prominently.
Market implications
It is the benchmark for Kenya's cycle, East Africa's leading economy and a regional services hub. Firm growth supports the shilling and gives the Central Bank of Kenya room, while a slowdown, with high debt, complicates fiscal policy.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and revisions, so early figures are not final. Heavy reliance on weather-sensitive agriculture and a large informal sector add volatility and hamper measurement.
