About this indicator

Frequency
Monthly
Release
Roughly one to two months after the reference quarter closes (advance estimate and final figure).
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Luxembourg over a period. Published by the statistics office STATEC, it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of the Luxembourg economy.
How it's calculated
STATEC estimates it via the expenditure, output and income approaches, which must reconcile, using seasonally adjusted data under Eurostat's ESA framework. It is released in levels and as quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and year-on-year (YoY) growth.
Market implications
It is the cyclical reference for a small economy heavily concentrated in financial services. Firm growth confirms the health of the financial centre and supports high revenues, while a slowdown would quickly feed into the public accounts given the sectoral concentration.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and with revisions that can be sizeable given the economy's small size. The dominance of finance and cross-border flows produces high quarterly volatility that makes the underlying trend hard to read.
