Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Measures the change in prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Malaysian households. Published by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), it is the country's main gauge of inflation.
How it's calculated
Built from a regular price survey across the states, weighting each item by its share of household spending on an index with a base year of 100. It is released as an annual (YoY) and monthly (MoM) rate of change.
Market implications
Inflation is a key reference for Bank Negara Malaysia when setting the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR). A higher-than-expected print tends to favour rate rises and supports the ringgit; food and fuel prices, partly subsidised, carry a notable weight.
Limitations
It captures only the selected basket, and fuel and food subsidies distort the reading, since changes to them can shift the index sharply. Core inflation, excluding energy and fresh food, better reflects the underlying trend.
