Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Malaysia and is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of its economy. It is published by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
How it's calculated
It is compiled through the demand, output and income approaches, which must reconcile. It is released in real terms as an annual rate of change, with a sizeable weight of manufacturing, services and exports of electronics and commodities.
Market implications
It is the main reference for judging Malaysia's cycle and guides the policy of Bank Negara Malaysia and the path of the ringgit. As a highly open, export-led economy it is sensitive to global trade and to semiconductor demand.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and early estimates are later revised. Exposure to external trade and commodities can drive sharp swings from quarter to quarter.
