Release

INEGI releases Aggregate Supply and Demand (which carries quarterly private consumption) some eight weeks after the quarter ends (08:00 Mexico City time).

What it is

Measures spending by Mexican households on consumer goods and services. It is the largest component of domestic demand and is published by INEGI within the national accounts framework (SCNM).

How it's calculated

INEGI estimates it in volume terms at constant prices (2018 base), quarterly, in both original and seasonally adjusted series. It is usually tracked as a year-on-year change and a quarter-on-quarter rate.

Market implications

It is the key gauge of domestic demand: strong private consumption underpins GDP and can fuel inflationary pressures, while a slowdown points to a cooling economy and helps shape the stance of Banco de México.

Limitations

It is released with a lag (around two months after the quarter ends) and is subject to revision. The year-on-year change of the original series blends calendar and base effects, so it is best cross-checked against the seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter rate.
