Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Measures the change in prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Moldovan households. Published by the National Bureau of Statistics, it is the country's main measure of inflation.
How it's calculated
Compiled from a regular price survey across localities, weighting each item by its share of household consumption on an index with a base year of 100. It is reported as an annual (YoY) and monthly (MoM) change.
Market implications
Inflation is the key variable for the National Bank of Moldova, which sets interest rates under an inflation-targeting regime. A hotter-than-expected print tends to point to rate rises and weighs on the leu; it also reflects energy and food prices, to which the Moldovan economy is highly exposed.
Limitations
It covers only the selected basket and is very sensitive to energy and food prices, which carry a large weight and add substantial volatility. Core inflation, excluding energy and unprocessed food, gives a clearer read on the underlying trend.
