Release
Published annually (with quarterly advance estimates in some economies), subject to revision with the national accounts.
What it is
Measures the balance of Moldova's government accounts: a deficit occurs when spending exceeds revenue, a surplus when the reverse holds. Published by the Ministry of Finance and usually expressed as a percentage of GDP.
How it's calculated
Calculated as the gap between general government revenue (including grants and external aid) and spending under the IMF government finance statistics framework, and expressed relative to GDP.
Market implications
Moldova relies on IMF and EU programmes and donor support, so the deficit is central to disbursements and debt sustainability. The war in neighbouring Ukraine and energy costs have raised its financing needs.
Limitations
It is a low-frequency series prone to revision. The balance before and after external grants should be distinguished, bearing in mind heavy reliance on remittances and donor financing that is highly sensitive to the geopolitical backdrop.
