Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Moldova and is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of its economy. It is published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
How it's calculated
It is compiled through the demand, output and income approaches, which must reconcile. It is released in real terms as an annual rate of change, with farming and inward remittances as notable drivers.
Market implications
It is the main reference for assessing Moldova's cycle and guides the policy of the National Bank of Moldova, which watches inflation and the leu closely. It is a small, open economy exposed to agriculture, energy prices and the neighbouring war in Ukraine.
Limitations
It is released several weeks after the reference period and early estimates are later revised. Heavy reliance on agriculture and remittances brings marked seasonality and year-on-year volatility.
