What it is
Measures the share of Moldova's labour force that is without work and actively seeking a job. Compiled by Moldova's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), it is the main indicator of its labour market.
How it's calculated
It is drawn from the NBS Labour Force Survey, applying the ILO definition of unemployment. It is expressed as an annual percentage of the labour force.
Market implications
Its trend signals the Moldovan economy's ability to create jobs and retain its population. A low unemployment rate may reflect mass emigration rather than a strong market; the effect on the leu, on a managed float overseen by the National Bank of Moldova, is modest.
Limitations
High emigration and remittances distort the labour force, so a low unemployment rate does not imply a strong market. Widespread informal employment and sampling error limit the interpretation of the figure.
