What it is
Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Montenegro over a year. Published by the national statistics office (MONSTAT), it is the most comprehensive gauge of the size and pace of growth of the Montenegrin economy.
How it's calculated
It is compiled using the output, expenditure and income approaches, which should agree, following the European ESA 2010 methodology. Reported in euros at current and constant prices, with the real annual growth rate measured against the previous year.
Market implications
It is the key reference for assessing the cycle of a small, tourism-dependent economy. Strong growth improves public finances and employment; a weak reading reflects sensitivity to the tourist season and external demand. Montenegro uses the euro, so it has no independent monetary policy.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and early estimates are revised later. The large weight of tourism introduces strong seasonality and high volatility, and the small size of the economy means a single sector can move the headline figure.
