What it is
Measures the change in prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Moroccan households. Published by the High Commission for Planning (HCP), it is Morocco's main gauge of inflation.
How it's calculated
Based on a monthly price survey across Morocco's main cities. Items are weighted by their share of household spending and aggregated into an index with a base year (index 100). Average annual inflation averages the year's year-on-year rates.
Market implications
It is the central reference for Bank Al-Maghrib's monetary policy when setting interest rates. High inflation pushes rates higher and weighs on households' purchasing power and the cost of living.
Limitations
It only measures the selected basket, not the whole economy. Food prices carry a heavy weight in Morocco and are highly sensitive to harvests and drought; the underlying trend is tracked via core inflation, which excludes energy and fresh food.
