What it is	Measures the change in Dutch households' spending on goods and services, based on the national accounts compiled by the statistics office CBS. It is the private consumption component of GDP, unlike retail sales, which only cover the retail trade.
How it's calculated	The CBS estimates total spending by resident households on durable goods, non-durables and services from national accounts sources (sales, VAT, spending surveys), in constant prices (volume) and adjusted for working days. It is released as a year-on-year change.
Market implications	Private consumption is the largest component of domestic demand, so this reading is one of the best gauges of spending strength in the Netherlands. Sustained declines point to weaker GDP ahead and reinforce expectations of looser ECB monetary policy.
Limitations	The first releases are provisional and later revised by the CBS. The headline does not distinguish between goods and services, so the breakdown must be checked. As a volume measure, it depends on the deflator applied.
