What it is
The Netherlands Manufacturing PMI is a diffusion index based on a survey of purchasing managers in Dutch industry, compiled by S&P Global together with Nevi (the Dutch purchasing management association) and sponsored by ABN AMRO. A reading above 50 signals expansion and below 50 contraction. The Netherlands publishes no separate services PMI or 'flash' estimate.
How it's calculated
A weighted composite of five sub-indices: New Orders (30%), Output (25%), Employment (20%), Suppliers' Delivery Times (15%) and Stocks of Purchases (10%), seasonally adjusted. Only the final reading is published, early each month.
Market implications
It offers an early read on the Dutch industrial cycle. The Netherlands is a key logistics and industrial hub for the euro area (the port of Rotterdam), so its PMI is watched as a leading indicator of European trade and feeds the ECB's cyclical picture. A reading above 50 points to expanding industry.
Limitations
It is a qualitative survey: it measures the direction of change, not its magnitude. It lacks a flash estimate and a dedicated services PMI, unlike the larger euro area economies, and the seasonal adjustment factors are revised periodically.
