Release

What it is
Measures the change in prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Nicaraguan households. Published by the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN), it is the country's main gauge of inflation.
How it's calculated
Based on a monthly price survey across Nicaragua's main cities. Items are weighted by their share of household spending and aggregated into an index with a base year (index 100). Average annual inflation averages the year's year-on-year rates.
Market implications
It is a key reference for the Central Bank of Nicaragua, which manages a crawling peg of the córdoba against the dollar. High inflation erodes purchasing power and shapes wages and the cost of living.
Limitations
It only measures the selected basket, not the whole economy. Food prices and imported fuel carry a heavy weight; the underlying trend is tracked via core inflation, which excludes energy and fresh food.
