Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Nicaragua over a year. It is published by the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN) and is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of growth of the economy.
How it's calculated
The BCN compiles GDP from the expenditure, production (sector value added plus net taxes) and income sides. It is expressed in córdobas at current and constant prices, with the real year-on-year change measuring the economy's growth.
Market implications
It is the key reference for Nicaragua's cycle, heavily reliant on agricultural exports and remittances. Firm growth points to more jobs and revenue, whereas a weak reading strains the public accounts and the central bank's reserves.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and early estimates are revised later. Heavy dependence on commodities and remittances raises volatility, and a large informal economy is not fully reflected.
