Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Nigeria over a year. Published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of growth of Africa's largest economy.
How it's calculated
It is estimated from the output, expenditure and income sides, which should match. Reported in naira at current and constant prices, with the NBS typically splitting oil and non-oil GDP; the real annual growth rate is measured against the previous year.
Market implications
It is the main reference for judging Nigeria's cycle, shaped by oil, agriculture and services. Robust growth supports revenues and employment; a soft reading fuels concerns about public finances and the naira, and shapes Central Bank of Nigeria policy.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and early estimates are revised. High inflation distorts the nominal reading, much activity is informal and poorly captured, and oil dependence introduces strong volatility tied to crude prices and output.
