Statistics Norway
Frequency
Monthly
Release
Roughly one to two months after the reference quarter closes (advance estimate and final figure).
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the total value of all goods and services produced in Norway over a period. It is published by Statistics Norway (SSB), which releases both total GDP and mainland GDP (Fastlands-Norge), excluding oil, gas and shipping.
How it's calculated
Estimated via the demand, output and income approaches. SSB publishes a seasonally adjusted quarterly series; markets focus mainly on mainland GDP, with its quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and year-on-year (YoY) changes in volume terms.
Market implications
It is the benchmark for Norway's cycle and a guide for Norges Bank. Markets watch mainland GDP because it isolates the non-oil activity that drives monetary policy; a strong print supports higher rates and the krone (NOK), while total GDP reflects the energy sector more.
Limitations
Total GDP is highly volatile owing to oil and gas output and shipping, which is why the mainland measure is preferred. It is released with a lag and the first estimates are revised in later releases.
