About this indicator

Source
Statistics Norway
Frequency
Monthly
Release
About 12-14 days after the reference month ends.
What it is
Norway's total producer price index (PPI): the change in prices received by producers in oil and gas extraction, manufacturing, mining and electricity. Published by Statistics Norway (SSB) and, because it includes oil and gas, dominated by energy prices.
How it's calculated
An index (2021=100) compiled by Statistics Norway from Norwegian producers' selling prices (domestic and export markets, all industries). It is released as a 12-month and a monthly percentage change.
Market implications
Being dominated by oil and gas, its swings mainly reflect the international price of energy rather than purely domestic cost pressures. It is useful as a leading gauge of imported and exported inflation, but very noisy.
Limitations
Extremely volatile month to month owing to its heavy oil and gas weighting, which makes it a poor proxy for underlying domestic inflation. Energy-excluding aggregates give a cleaner read of the underlying trend.
