What it isNorway's K2 Credit Indicator measures the year-on-year growth of total domestic gross debt of the general public (households, non-financial firms and municipal government) provided by Norwegian sources. It is the benchmark gauge of credit expansion in the economy and is published by Statistics Norway (SSB).
How it's calculatedIt is compiled from records of domestic debt (bank loans, bonds, certificates and other sources) and expressed as a twelve-month growth rate in per cent for the general public as a whole.
Market implicationsHigh, sustained credit growth can signal risks of over-indebtedness or asset bubbles, particularly in Norway's housing market; a sharp slowdown points to weaker consumption and investment. It is closely watched by Norges Bank for its financial-stability implications.
LimitationsIt does not distinguish healthy credit (funding productive investment) from riskier lending, and monthly revisions can be sizeable. As a year-on-year stock measure, it responds slowly to turns in the cycle.
