What it is
Measures the change in the price of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Pakistani households. It is published by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) and is the country's main gauge of inflation.
How it's calculated
Compiled from a regular price survey across a wide sample of cities and outlets, weighting each item by its spending share on an index with a base year of 100; food and energy carry heavy weights. Average annual inflation averages the year's year-on-year changes.
Market implications
Inflation is the key reference for the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) when setting rates. A high reading, highly sensitive to food, energy and the rupee, tends to point to rate rises and squeezes household purchasing power.
Limitations
It captures only the defined basket, and the heavy food and energy weights make it highly volatile, with rupee depreciation adding imported pressure. For the underlying trend, core inflation, excluding energy and unprocessed food, is followed.
