Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Pakistan over a fiscal year. Published by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), it is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of growth of the Pakistani economy.
How it's calculated
It is estimated from the output side (agriculture, industry and services plus taxes), the expenditure side and the income side, which should agree. Reported in rupees at current and constant prices and on a fiscal-year basis (July to June), with real growth measured against the previous fiscal year.
Market implications
It is the main reference for judging Pakistan's cycle, with a heavy weight of agriculture, textiles and remittances. Solid growth eases pressure on the external accounts; a weak reading, with the country under IMF programmes, shapes State Bank of Pakistan policy and the rupee.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and early estimates are revised substantially. The fiscal year differs from the calendar year, a large share of activity is informal, and harvests add strong seasonality and volatility to the figure.
