Release
Published annually, covering the full year and subject to revision.
What it is
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the value of all final goods and services produced in Panama and is the broadest gauge of the size and pace of its economy. It is published by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) of the Comptroller General.
How it's calculated
It is compiled through the demand, output and income approaches, which must reconcile. It is released in real terms as an annual rate of change, with a large weight of Canal logistics, financial services and construction.
Market implications
It is the main reference for assessing Panama's cycle; as a dollarised economy, GDP matters more than domestic monetary policy and is key for public finances and the sovereign rating. Panama Canal traffic is a barometer of global trade.
Limitations
It is released with a lag and early estimates are later revised. Concentration in the Canal, logistics and construction means sectoral or drought shocks can move the headline sharply.
