What it is
Measures the change in prices of a representative basket of goods and services bought by Paraguayan households. Published by the Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP), it is the country's main gauge of inflation.
How it's calculated
Based on a monthly price survey, focused mainly on the Asunción metropolitan area. Items are weighted by their share of household spending and aggregated into an index with a base year (index 100). Average annual inflation averages the year's year-on-year rates.
Market implications
It is the central reference for the Central Bank of Paraguay's monetary policy under its inflation-targeting framework. A reading above target pushes the policy rate higher and can weigh on the guaraní.
Limitations
It only measures the selected basket, not the whole economy. Food prices carry a heavy weight and are sensitive to harvests and weather; the underlying trend is tracked via core inflation, which excludes energy and fresh food.
